Job summary:

Red Hat's Global Support Services organization is dedicated to resolving the issues of our enterprise customers quickly and effectively. The Global Support Engineering Group provides high-level technical support and sustaining engineering services designed to maximize up-time and reduce IT costs.
Our Software Maintenance Engineers maintain close working relationships with our customer's top developers and architects and assist our frontline support engineers with the most complex and challenging issues. Daily contact with our R&D team allows one to regularly work alongside some of the best open source developers on the planet.

Primary job responsibilities:

• Resolve complex customer problems within core Linux development tools including gcc/g++, binutils, systemtap, strace, gdb, etc.
• Analyze upstream development against current customer reported defects and develop patches to resolve the issue
• Use available tools to investigate and troubleshoot technical issues
• Record customer interactions to include investigation, troubleshooting, & the resolution of issues
• Work closely with Red Hat's production support engineers, technical account managers and development engineering
• Demonstrate considerable judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions
• Manage workload to ensure that all customer issues are timely handled and driven to resolution
• Assist in the development of comprehensive and reusable self-service solutions for future incidents

Required skills:

• A minimum of 5 years experience as a support, sustaining or development engineer or other directly related experience in an enterprise environment
• Outstanding understanding of Linux tools, with emphasis on gcc, binutils ,glibc, gdb and systemtap.
• Must possess and demonstrate understanding of compiler implementation and other packages included in a Linux distribution
• Linux operating system installation, configuration, upgrades, and maintenance experience a plus
• Must possess a very solid understanding of run-time environment implementation.
• A solid understanding of hardware ABI's for x86-64, i386, ppc and z-series.
• A solid understanding of hardware and computer architecture as well as compilers, linkers, assemblers,debuggers, loaders and runtime environments for multiple languages.
• Strong development level experience with C,C++,Java, assembler and familiarity with writing patches
• In depth knowledge of ISO language standards and Posix specifications
• Some experience with Linux kernel internals would be an asset.
• Experience writing scripts using BASH, Python, or Perl to troubleshoot and correct Linux issues
• Upstream involvement in open-source projects (patches submitted for upstream inclusion) a plus, but not required
• Commitment to providing the best experience possible for Red Hat customers
• BS or higher in Computer Science or other technical discipline or equivalent work experience
